Description

This is a full-color 3D print of Sopwith 1½ Strutter N5088 of Flight Sub-Lt. John E. Sharman of 3 Naval Wing, RNAS, as well as A.B. Shearer.  Before Sharman became one of the famous members of the Canadian “Black Flight” of Sopwith Triplanes, he flew this single-seat Sopwith bomber with 3 Naval Wing.  3 Naval Wing had attempted to become an effective long-range bombing force in co-operation with the French, but its mix of unreliable aircraft (at least, in the winter) and lack of quality escorts limited its success.   By spring of 1917 the unit was broken up and its pilots sent to 3 and 10 Naval Squadrons, and its remaining Strutters were transferred to the French.  N5088 was transferred to the French on 19 Apr 1917.
